You mean, if he had not died, what would he have done? Pure speculation ... ... maybe he would have become a writer and would have continued to make records ... a "normal" work like most of us he probably would not have done ... I think.

I have no idea when he'd go back to working. Maybe he'd try to make movies? His poetry wasn't selling, and his contract was up with Elektra.
In 1970, he says how he feels alive on stage, and that working in the studio is boring. But at the same time, it seems like he couldn't handle the road. If I were in his position, I'd do the one album a year, and invest the profits into movies. Many times one can make money simply by having their name on it. Invest $5, and become an "Executive Producer"... Of course, he did "HWY" which people booed at the concert, and Jim mentioned it being more of an exercise, but I wish he would have had some dialogue, a character or two, and had the same looking movie in the desert.. Maybe all of life's importance in that car ride, until "Billy" kills him, and then makes a phone call to Michael McClure.

Even before he "made it" he was practically homeless, sleeping on rooftops because he wouldn't do any work that was un-artistic.
