In my early teens, I was drawn to Sahl as both funny and for his fair-play political sarcasm. He went after everyone with winks and smiles more pointed than vicious. He taught that there was enough blame to go around. Still is. A few years ago, I made sure to attend one of his last solo standup shows in Manhattan. Even on the fade he was funny. Then, I fulfilled a wish to meet him, visiting him after the show. Sahl once referenced Wernher von Braun, one of Adolf Hitler’s top “secret weapon” men, who changed the tide of World War II for the Nazis in late 1944 with his indiscriminately murderous, slave labor-made V-2 terror rockets. Mostly aimed at England, they killed thousands of civilians. At the end of the war, von Braun was secreted to the US, where he became a leading rocketry man for NASA. Sahl noted that a facts-fudged biographical film about von Braun’s life was titled, “I Aim at the Stars,” then added his own subtitle, “But Sometimes I Hit London.” by Phil Mushnick

"Nothing in my professional career has ever ecastled me as much, you know, I'm not naive about the function of government and I'm certainly not naive about the possible implications after reading the information that was given the Commission and after questioning witnesses myself, but I sat there stunned, absolutely stunned as the evidence was assembled by Mr. Garrison, who is, in my view, a very brilliant man. "I've been with Jim Garrison, the New Orleans D.A., rather regularly since I've been here. I saw him the first day I arrived. We were together for a couple of hours then and I've seen him at his office since then and I've met with other members of his staff. We haven't gossiped idly, we've exchanged information; he seid that he was grateful to me for having written the book and for having raised the question and for having kent the deer onen until his investigation began, which began about two months after the publication of Rush to Judgment. I gave him the little bit that I knew about the areas in which he has assembled a vast amount of information. The information which is assembled strikes me as being amazing in a number of respects. "First of all, his whole approach wez in terms of studying what the conspirators said, how often they met, who they are, and. what it is they were planning in advance, and from that he drew a whole series of conclusions which flow very naturally from all of that evidence. What I fend striking is that, of course, I approached the matter in writing the book and ztudying the case from a different vicreoint entirely, by an examination of the emnirical evidence regarding what took place in Dallas on November 22; that is, the study of the ballistics, the study of the eyewitness testimony, the motion picture film, the medical evidence, etc. nnd, of course, it is my conclusion that shots came from at least two directions—that the fatal shot came from an coca not from the Book Depository Building but from an area in front of the limousine behind the wooden fence up on the Grassy Knoll. Garrison has reached. exactly the came conclusions by examining the evidence regarding what it is the conspiretors were planning before the assaesination took place. He has concluded that the fatal shot came from behind the wooden fence. He has a rather good idea.= to how the two persons behind the fence were able to escape from the scene. He knows, and this is what was the most startling evidence as it was presented. He presents with great detail and he presents it with such detail that it is impossible not to accept it, indicating that he relies upon various witnesses, not just the one key witness who has testified, called the key witness by the press but he is a cog, an important one, but one of the many, many, many equally imnortant cogs. And not only witnesses but documentary evidence which just cannot be denied. As he presents the evidence, this impossible story which is true is presented. The story is that Garrison knows now and has'told me who planned the assassination of President Kennedy and who fired the shots that killed President Kennedy. Garrison, of course, is not talking ebout this. He cannot present that which he has (the information) to the press or to the public because if he does do that, any conviction which he secures will not stand up based upon the ruling in the Sheppard ease and other cases and of course if I were to violate his confidence, and release that information, that would do the same thing, and I'm not going to do that. But the evidence that he has is massively detailed and shows that very powerful forces, I think I can say thee, that the evidence is conclusive that no foreign power was involved, acne at all, but a very newerful domestic force ',ins involved in planning the events which culminated in the death of President Kennedy and that the Persons that actually eaeticinated in the conspiracy and in the asseseinaticn are known to Mr. Garrison, to his staff, and now to me. The evidence is so conclusive, I believe, that when nerrizen walks into that courtreel in New neleans, and presents it, and when the nmerican people learn for the first time who planned the events, which culminated in the death of President Kennedy, they are going to be outraged, absolutely outraged, and shocked and stunned. Then I think that there are going to be some very imnortant, drastic changes in this country. There will have to be after that evidence is known." virginiachronicle.com/?a=d&d=NVS19580523.1.14&e=-------en-20--1--txt-txIN--------(MAKE THIS INTO AN RTF WORD DOCUMENT ON THE OTHER LAPTOP) Northern Virginia Sun, Volume 22, Number 200, 23 May 1958 NEW YORK (INS)—George Gobel'i last *how of the season droned away In so-so style. Gobel, too, sank to the Tru-jlllo-Venezuela tropicallty, whose only resemblance to the treasured old brand of Will Rogers political Impudence Is In swinging jokes at a current event. Only this way the jokes are swung by the neck . . . There was real and wise comic spirit in Will Rogers, not ju#t shallow gag-writing , . . Mort Sahl tried again on the "Tonight" show (which sure needs Jack Paar more than ever) and proved he is not so much an angry young man as resentful, probably of his lack of true comic spirit . . . Used to be a radio gent in our hometown of Buffalo named Joe Wesp, whose approach to the news was sort of detached and wise and the tone of his voice made his analysis of the news exactly what he was called: "The Ironic Reporter" , . . There also was a fine old gent in our home burg by the name of John D. Wells, another wise and Ironically gentle man who took an amused spectator’s attlture toward the news, and knew how to have fun with it . . . His most devastatingly cruel shaft was aimed at a popular crooner of his radiocasting day, about whom John D. Wells waxed sadly: "There was a plot today to kidnap Rudy Vallee, but some darned fool circumvented it.” F COURSE, the Mort Sahls seek their targets in geopolitics. It’s always a cinch Sahl will have something harshly impertinent to garble about Ike or Nixon or John Edgar Hoover which Sahl likes to think proves courage, and we do not mean just selecting such Washington folk as targets, for they are prominent and therefore open to humor and wit . . . Precisely why NBC sought Mort Sahl as its voice of modern wit or humor in Sunday’s "Wide, Wide World" telecast is slightly amusing . . . His attitude is what is called “offbeat" but his reaction to almost everything is negative, or else he doesn't discuss it: and his absolutely-to-be anticipated comments on any subject make him a sort of comic reactionary who seldom leaves his chosen field of soreheadedness. On the subject of using Nixon's misfortunes in South America as the peg to hang gags on, you somehow get the Idea from the Sahls and others commenting purportedly humorously or wittily thereupon, that some degree of satisfaction should be taken out of the fact that the VicePresident of the United States was attacked . . . The great old political XPtTs — always Will Rogers must be mentioned as the show business example—did not use freedom of speech as a coverup for freedom of bad taste, poor judgment. Bob Hope, for instance, is a gent with an Eisenhower-golfing joke always at the ready, and no one resents it . . . not if it’s funny . . . Sahl seems to urge his audience to admire him just for being a comedy delinquent, adult in his selection of topical targets, but juvenile in his taste and manner, please note.
